THE HOME SAFETY COUNCIL OFFERS ADVICE TO PREVENT SEASONAL ACCIDENTS Spring is officially here and homes across America are in need of a deep clean. Unfortunately, all that lifting, climbing, trimming and other spring-cleaning work heightens the risk for home injuries. Yet, according to a new survey by the national nonprofit Home Safety Council, only six percent of adults recognize the increased risk for home injuries during the spring as compared with other seasons, leaving the vast majority of people in danger.

In fact, every year an average of nearly 5,000 Americans age 65 and older die from a fall-related injury at home. Unintentional Home Injury Deaths by State Between 1992 and 1999, New Mexico had the highest annual average rate of unintentional home injury deaths (13.03 per 100,000 persons), while Massachusetts had the lowest annual average rate (3.33 per 100,000 persons) (Figure 5.1 and Figure 5.2). Following New Mexico, Mississippi and Arizona had the second and third highest rates, exceeding the national average by 38 percent and 33 percent, respectively (Table 5.1). Following Massachusetts, Utah and Maryland had the lowest rates, with annual average rates of 42 percent and 36 percent lower than the national average, respectively.
